Japanese, Asian-fusion & Sushi Restaurants in Cornwall to Try

It’s a whole thing that Alex & I are obsessed with sushi and Japanese food, but until a few years ago, it was REALLY hard to find good restaurants for this in Cornwall.

I’m not joking. We had to go all the way to Japan back in 2020 to get our fix! (okay, kind of kidding…)

Thankfully, Cornwall has moved on and there are some great Japanese and Asian-fusion restaurants dotted around the county to try. We’ve tested a few, so I thought I’d share our favourites in this post, and some we haven’t tried yet but that are high up on our list!

Yue Restaurant, Truro

Yue has been a Chinese takeaway in Truro for several years, but they’ve recently started offering Japanese food too and the sushi is AMAZING! This is our new fave local takeaway for sure. Yes, it’s quite random that they sell both, and while some of the other Japanese dishes aren’t quite how we like them, the sushi is incredible, so well worth a try.

Bango Kitchen, Penryn

This is a great casual restaurant run by the guys behind The Shellfish Pig streetfood van, and is perfect for a chilled lunch, dinner, or takeaway, specialising in delicious Japanese food. They do sell sushi here, but my personal fave is their ramen – honestly SO tasty!

Kota Kai, Porthleven

I’ve raved about Kota Kai before and it’s definitely one of our fave restaurants in Cornwall. They offer lots of Japanese dishes such as bao buns, ramen, chicken etc., but also a lot of ‘Asian-fusion’ dishes that take more fine-dining style dishes or Cornish favourites and add an Asian twist.

Bao Bites, Truro

If you love bao buns, you’ve gotta try Bao Bites in Truro because this is literally their specialty. They’re definitely some of the best bao buns we’ve had, and it’s a super easy lunch or snack to grab and go when you’re in town.

Okay so those are our favourites from the ones we’ve tried so far in Cornwall! Below are some places we haven’t tried yet but have been recommended:

Sushea, Newquay

As you can imagine, this spot – tucked away on Fore Street – offers sushi, but also some other Asian-fusion dishes as well. I’ve heard good things and am definitely keen to go along to try this place too!

Fat Cat Cornwall, Newquay

Fat Cat Cornwall offer Japanese street food – particularly ramen and katsu – that just looks INCREDIBLE! They’re not actually a restaurant, and more of a ‘pop-up’ event-based restaurant (although mostly around Newquay area) and I’ve just not managed to catch them at any events yet. I look forward to trying their food soon though!

Robo, Falmouth

Based in Falmouth, Robo offer sushi and Asian-fusion dishes in a casual bar / canteen style venue. We’re yet to try this but keen to give it a go as it’s so close to us!
