Good for the planet, good for staying snug this Summer!
Family-run Cornish company, Atlantic Blankets, have been around since 2007, designing beautiful blankets for every occasion, inspired by the coast here in Cornwall. I included them in one of my Cornish Gift Guides before, and I love what they’re about as a business.
When I heard they’d just released a new collection of eco-friendly, sustainable blankets made from recycled materials, I was eager to hear more!
As with all their products, these blankets are made in Britain, but what makes them unique is that the company is now using offcuts and recycling unwanted cotton from t-shirt manufacturers, that would otherwise be headed for landfill sites.
The process of reusing these materials involves no extra dying, meaning water is saved and chemical products kept to a minimum; the cotton is simply spun and transformed into these beautiful blankets.
Using materials in this way means less waste – a HUGE issue with the fashion industry at the moment in clothing manufacturers across the world. One of the most shocking documentaries I’ve watched recently on Netflix was ‘The True Cost’; all about how fast fashion is not only incredibly unethical, but also unsustainable and damaging to our planet as well due to the waste.
If you haven’t watched it yet it will shock you!
Therefore I’m a huge advocate for brands reusing and recycling materials to create new products, and its this innovative way of asking how we can transform our waste is what’s really going to make a difference in the meantime while fast fashion and unsustainable industries aren’t necessarily slowing down.
Small Cornish businesses seem to generally be extremely good at these little innovations and going to extra lengths to make their products (and packaging!) more sustainable. Because we are surrounded by nature, we can see firsthand along our stunning coastline how waste is having an impact on our planet.
Atlantic Blankets packaging was also all plastic free when my items arrived, which I love to see.
This blanket is their Navy Geometric Recycled Cotton Blanket, in a standard size – perfect for picnic-ing or cuddling up in as one person. Their blankets also come in Small size (for children/pets or a travel blanket) and King (ideal for bed throws and super snuggly days on the sofa!).
There’s already a HUGE range of colours and designs in their recycled range – so many to choose from and all of them reversible too. I was delighted by how soft they are, and they definitely help to keep the wind out (as tested on this particularly cold photoshoot day!), and I can’t wait to bring mine along to evenings at the beach and clifftop BBQs to keep me warm throughout the Summer.
I was also kindly sent the Cornish Palms design, which I can’t wait to feature in future posts too – it’s a super bright and fun design!
If you’d like to find out more about these gorgeous blankets and take a look through all the designs, head over to the Atlantic Blankets website for more details.
*I was sent two blankets in return for a review, but all opinions are my own & I wouldn’t feature items here if I didn’t truly love them!
