I haven’t had a chilled out Sunday brunch in what seems like forever!
Honestly February was a pretty busy month – we had a big night out at the beginning of the month (which left me with a 3 day hangover…oops!), followed by then I was away for two weekends in a row for a hen party, a girl’s trip to Appledore (courtesy of Frankie – you can read all about it on her blog!), and a friend’s birthday night out to kick off March too! There basically wasn’t a single Sunday where I wasn’t feeling tired and a little fragile from one too many gin & tonics…
So Alex and I decided to have a chilled one last weekend; we made a homecooked dinner, watched the movie ‘Life’ on Netflix (scary and gross but would recommend for a gripping space horror!), and were in bed by 10pm! We woke up early on Sunday morning feeling refreshed, and headed out for a tasty brunch together at 10am. Idyllic!
I’ve been wanting to visit the new Origin Coffee cafe in Penryn for a while; I’ve heard great things about The Warehouse, from its delicious veggie-friendly breakfast menu, to their extremely Instagrammable interiors. They were kind enough to reach out to me and offer us to come and have a brunch on them for a review too, which was amazing.
We parked on the quay and walked past Jubilee Wharf to the cafe, which opened around this time last year, and sat down at our table to have a look at the breakfast menu. I’d had a stalk of their dishes on Instagram before we came (does anyone else do that to help them to decide what they want to eat?) so I knew I was going to be choosing the french toast option! Meanwhile, Alex went for the potato hash and we both had some tasty Origin coffee to start with too.
I used to drink a couple of black coffees every single day, but cut way back a couple of years ago and now coffee is definitely a treat for me! I don’t really like instant coffee and I refuse to keep ‘nice’ coffee in the house, or else Alex and I will both kickstart our caffeine habits again, so I really enjoy treating myself to a really good quality coffee when we’re out.
I had a cappuccino with oat milk and it was just the thing to make me feel even more awake and refreshed for a productive, hangover-free Sunday! It was super creamy and tasted perfect, but then what else would you expect from an award-winning coffee roaster’s cafe? I’m also a big fan of Origin due to their roots in Cornwall and their ethical, fair trade ethos.
Our brunches arrived and I was basically in heaven. My french toast came with grilled peaches, pistachios, greek yogurt and plenty of syrup, and it all tasted amazing together. Alex’s potato hash tasted great too, with shallots, garlic and a large fried duck egg too; he said the only thing it was missing was a nice crispy piece of bacon, which would have finished it off nicely – a classic meat-loving guy comment! I personally think it the plant-based menu is a great choice.
We both loved the decor in The Warehouse; it’s super modern and minimal, and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the aesthetic of this place. That along with the presentation of the food, this is a must-visit for any Instagram foodie out there!
The cafe is open 7 days a week and serves breakfast and lunch, but due to its popularity I’d recommend avoiding peak brunch times as it was pretty busy in there! It’s no surprise it’s so popular though; it’s definitely the best coffee around AND the menu was totally delicious too. I’ll definitely be revisiting as it’s a useful place to meet clients for meetings as well as the perfect spot for a relaxed Sunday – which I can’t wait to be repeating again soon!
Origin are also known for putting on interesting and fun workshops in their coffee shops, and The Warehouse are hosting a ‘Cupping’ workshop (where you can learn all about the different types of coffee) on the 18th March, and a ‘Flavours’ workshop (all about a sensory analysis of coffee, as you would with chocolate or wine!) on the 4th April, which both sound fantastic! You can learn more about these on the Origin Facebook Page.
* Alex and I were kindly given a complimentary brunch in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own as always :)
