What do you do on a Winter Sunday when you just want to chill?
This particular Sunday we’d already been for 2 long dog walks and done a load of cleaning, so we wanted to take it easy for the rest of the day. However I am not a very ‘chill’ person, and I struggle with the concept of sitting at home of a Sunday afternoon doing nothing at all…
So I still wanted to get out of the house, but keep it relaxed at the same time.
The solution of course was one of my fave pass times; hot chocolates by the beach!
This seems to be becoming a bit of ‘a thing’ with us, (we were at Pandora Inn for hot chocolates on Boxing Day, and Gylly Beach Cafe for food & hot drinks last weekend), but it truly is the best way to spend a Wintery Sunday in January!
So we headed over to Porthtowan; 10 minutes drive from where we live, and the beach I spent most of my childhood at (also the village where N and I met!). It’s a beautiful beach in a small, lazy valley, and the village itself has pretty much the most chilled out vibe you can get – so it was the perfect choice.
We ordered hot chocolates and a slice of (totally delicious!) banana bread from the Porthtowan Beach Cafe to eat outside facing the dunes and sea. Despite it being the middle of January, it didn’t feel too cold to be sat outside; granted we were both wearing lots of layers, but the cafe is actually very sheltered too.
Of course, I’m never chill enough to forgo a brief cliff walk to admire the views at Porthtowan. With stunning coastal walks on either side of the beach, it’s known for it’s wonderful landscape.
It’s always a bit of a surfers paradise too, even on a dull foggy day like this. The water did look very inviting though, but I just have to remind myself that it is, in fact, the icy cold Atlantic, and it looks less welcoming.
Good on those brave souls though!
I actually told myself I would do a New Years Day swim this year, but alas, I chickened out. January 1st was pretty grim in itself, but even on a nice day I just know it’s going to be unpleasant… we’ll see if I can muster up a February swim instead!
What’s your favourite way to chill on a Sunday?

Love this idea – if only I lived on the coast! Hot chocolate is the best and I can imagine it tastes just perfect when you’re all wrapped up by the sea.
Gorgeous photos as always :)

Awh thank you so much Naomi! :) Definitely worth a trip to the seaside for a warming snack! Xx
I really enjoy reading your blog. We recently moved to Cornwall and live only 5 min drive away from Porthtowan. I love your ideas of spending time at the beach. Obviously we have a winter ahead of us but this will not stop us from exploring. We have 3 children who love to climb on rocks so one day on low tide I will get them to find the pool you mentioned in another article. I cannot wait to see their faces 😍 thank you for all your hard work (with so much pleasure!) and help community to appreciate Cornwall.
