A Dog-Friendly Staycation near Bodmin, Cornwall: Classic Cottages Review
Spring is the perfect time to enjoy a staycation in a beautiful cottage in the Cornish countryside 🌸.
I don’t know about you, but this winter has definitely felt like one of the longest! I’m sure the bad weather is to blame, so this recent spell of sunshine and mild temperatures has got me feeling in the springtime mood.
There’s nothing quite like waking up on a lazy Saturday with a coffee while the birds are singing outside and the smell of warmer days is in the air, and a Cornish countryside staycation is one of the the best ways to experience this in full relaxation.
This post is sponsored by Classic Cottages, who kindly hosted us for this stay in exchange for a review! However I only ever share my honest opinions and experiences here on the blog.

About Mandalay: Our Cornish Cottage Stay near Bodmin
We stayed in one of Classic Cottage’s Cornwall holiday cottages just on the edge of Bodmin moor, named ‘Mandalay’, and were absolutely blown away when we arrived! This hidden gem is immaculately decorated, with a beautiful vaulted ceiling and open plan kitchen/dining/living space.
The space feels cosy yet open thanks to the large glass windows and sliding doors that open out onto the outside decking. Although it was still a little wintery on our visit so we didn’t get to enjoy it much, this decked area and garden is lovely and comes complete with a hot tub and even a fire pit!

While the dogs enjoyed exploring the outdoors, I couldn’t get over the stunning kitchen, pantry and dining space (my favourite part of any house!).
Meanwhile there’s also 3 double bedrooms (all en-suite!), each with patio doors leading outside, and we loved the little touches like the homemade brownies left for us too. I just wanted to move in, to be honest!

The Location: St. Breward near Bodmin
Classic Cottages have cottage getaways all over the country, with lots of options for the different areas of Cornwall too. Mandalay itself is based in a little country village called St. Breward, which sits at the edge of Bodmin moor and close to Camelford.
Below are some (dog friendly) places and things to do nearby:
Within 5 minutes of the cottage:
- The Old Inn (St. Breward’s village pub that is also the ‘highest inn in Cornwall’, and does a great carvery on a Sunday!)
- Bodmin moor walks (drive two minutes out of the village and you have all the moors at your fingertips, including Rough Tor, Brown Willy or Stannon Stone Circle all very close by)
Within 25 minutes of the cottage:
- Davidstow Airfield (a great woodland/moor walk with interesting ruined buildings to explore too!)
- The Camel Trail from Wadebridge (a great cycle trail that finishes in Padstow – bike hire available at the start points).
- Tintagel Castle (an English Heritage site with lots of legend around King Arthur)
- St. Nectan’s Glen (a magical woodland walk and waterfall attraction near Tintagel)
- Port Isaac (a traditional Cornish fishing village made popular by the hit series, Doc Martin)

Our relaxing staycation itinerary (what we got up to!):
I arrived on the Friday with the dogs at around 4pm, entering with the easy self check-in, and immediately explored the space with the dogs. Mandalay is one of Classic Cottages’ dog friendly properties which was amazing as it just makes little getaways like this so much easier (and more enjoyable!) when you can bring the WHOLE family along with you 🐶
That evening I cooked us a delicious sausage and pasta dinner from when Alex arrived, thoroughly enjoying how well-equipped and easy the kitchen was! We finished the night with some wine in the gorgeous outdoor hot tub (which was hot and ready for us to jump in when we got there).

On Saturday morning, we woke up and made egg soldiers for breakfast, before driving around 20 minutes to St. Nectan’s Glen, which I’d never been to before! The dogs loved walking along beside the stream, and the waterfall was beautiful to see as well.
We stopped for lunch on the way home at the St. Tudy Inn, and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in front of the wood burning stove while it rained outside – it was bliss! And the dogs loved every minute as well.

On Sunday we went for a walk on the moors (just 5 minutes from Mandalay), followed by a pub roast at The Old Inn in St. Breward village (apparently Cornwall’s highest inn due to it being on the edge of Bodmin moor!).
We were very sad to leave and say goodbye to this tranquil retreat. It was perfect for us for our dog friendly weekend, but I can imagine this would be an awesome space for a group of friends too.

Absolutely stunning scenery in some of those photos. I particularly like the one with path next to the roaring river. It’s not a place I’ve been yet but definitely somewhere I need to visit.

I recently stayed at a similar dog-friendly cottage near Bodmin, and I can totally relate—waking up to birdsong with a warm coffee in hand is pure bliss. The Cornish countryside is perfect for long walks with your furry friend, and it really does feel like a proper escape from city life. On quieter evenings, I even tried relaxing with Sprunki Retake on my tablet, which made for a fun, low-key way to wind down.

Wow, Mandalay sounds absolutely idyllic! That vaulted ceiling and open plan design are so appealing. The fire pit sounds amazing, even if the weather wasn’t quite right for it. Reminds me of building levels sometimes – striving for that perfect balance of open space and cozy detail! If you’re into creating that kind of satisfying experience, you might enjoy designing levels in Geometry Dash. It’s surprisingly creative.
Mandalay’s hot tub on the decking? What a treat! Walking those moors and visiting the highest pub in Cornwall at St. Breward was such a fun experience. I wish weekends like this were longer!
