What’s better than a relaxing getaway right by the sea in Cornwall? One where you can bring the dogs, of course!
There’s something about being able to share the enjoyment of a holiday or night away with your furry friends that feels so rewarding and satisfying – I love seeing Maizy and Pepper exploring new places and generally loving life. I suppose that’s what it must be like when you have kids, but these two are basically my babies…
The team at the Old Success Inn invited us to come and stay the night with the dogs in one of their brand new coastal chic rooms, and I was super excited to head down to one of Cornwall’s most beautiful spots – Sennen.
Sennen Cove – The Location
Sennen Cove is located pretty much right at the toe end of Cornwall, just a few miles from Land’s End, and its crystal clear water and soft white sand (the bay is literally called Whitesand Bay!) is known for its great surf and sunsets. It’s a Blue Flag beach and is lifeguarded throughout the season, making it a great family friendly beach for swimming and relaxing as well.
I hadn’t realised until we arrived, but the Old Success Inn has spectacular placement right on the waterfront, directly facing the beach and stunning ocean views. To the right you simply cross the road and walk straight down the slope to the beach, or to the left you can walk along to the lifeboat station and harbour. Both routes also take you onto the South West Coast Path, taking you along to Gwynver beach, or to Land’s End respectively.
This area of Cornwall is home to some of the most stunning coast walks, including:
The Old Success Inn Rooms – The Accommodation
The brand new coastal chic rooms at the Old Success Inn definitely wow-ed us when we walked in! Decorating in a modern nautical theme, you can tell there’s been great attention to detail.
All the new rooms have magical sea views, and ours boasted a large double bed, aircon, tv, seating area, dressing table, mini fridge and wardrobe area with towels and dressing gowns (and of course a shiny new ensuite too)! I loved all the little touches like takeaway coffee cups if you want to take your hot drinks to the beach, and a range of different flavoured teas (if you’re like me and like the herbal blends instead of breakfast tea!). The wifi was also excellent.
We were kindly set up with a beautiful little picnic hamper too, which included more dog treats, a set of Korev lagers and some Korev branded jumpers to keep us warm and cosy on our walk – all to enjoy with a Cornish cream tea that they gave us when we checked in. The Old Success in is owned and run by St. Austell Brewery, who are famous for their range of Cornish beers, including Korev, Tribute ale, Proper Job IPA and more.
The room has everything we could need, and the dogs were very happy too…
Dog Friendly at the Old Success Inn
This 17th century inn has 5 dog friendly rooms and cater for your furry friend perfectly! When we arrived, both Pepper and Maizy had been set up with their own beds, blankets and bowls (complete with name tags!), as well as a doggy goodie bag each which contained poop bags, tennis balls and chewy treats.
It’s these touches that really make you feel super welcome with your dogs – as though a place doesn’t just ‘accept’ dogs, but truly loves to host them too.
Pepper immediately decided she would prefer to sleep on the squishy bed and blanket they’d provided, rather than her own dog bed that we’d brought with us, and made herself very comfortable with her new ball. Meanwhile Maizy was raring to head out onto the beach for a walk!
Sennen Cove does have a seasonal dog ban which means dogs can’t go on the beach between 10am and 6pm in the summer season, but this ends on the 30th September, and even in summer they are still welcome on the beach here in the evenings and early mornings (which is what we did)! However you can easily walk straight onto the coast path and head along to Gwynver beach, which is beautiful and dog friendly all year round.
The Old Success Inn is also dog friendly in their pub restaurant too – both inside and outside -, where we ate that evening (the waitress even brought them treats and a water bowl straight away).
The Old Success Inn Dinner & Breakfast – The Food
The Inn has a lovely outdoor seating area and terrace (with heaters) if you want to make the most of the incredible sea view on their doorstep, or you can eat inside the pub for a cosy feel too.
The menu features quality pub classics, as well as lots of Cornish seafood options too. We went for the Crab Remick and the Crispy Calamari for starters, and I had Korev lager-steamed mussels for main course while Alex had the hand-press burger. It was all super tasty and Alex even said it was the best burger he’d had in AGES! My mussels were perfect, done just how I like them in a creamy sauce with bread and fries – yum.
For breakfast, the Inn offers classic buffet options (fruit, yogurt, cereals, toast etc.) as well as your choice of hot breakfast – including a full english, vegetarian breakfast, breakfast roll, salmon & scrambled eggs, and porridge with honey and banana. Alex, a self-confessed breakfast snob, thoroughly enjoyed his full english, filling him up before we headed off!
