Kynance Cove in Glorious Winter Fog

Yes that’s right, I finally visited Kynance Cove and… we couldn’t see anything.

I mentioned in my Cornish Bucket List last month that I had never been to Kynance Cove, which shocked a lot of people – it’s one of Cornwall’s finest landmarks ffs! Am I even Cornish if I haven’t been to Kynance Cove??

Well, this weekend, on what we thought was going to be just a normal grey Winter’s day, we thought it would be the perfect time to tick off one of my Cornish list items, and drove AN HOUR to the edge of the Lizard to see the magnificent Kynance Cove…

…and it was hidden behind a thick blanket of fog.

As we drove through Helston it was starting to get grey-er and grey-er, and as we journeyed deeper and deeper into the Lizard the fog got heavier and heavier until we could no longer see 20 metres in front of us.

Yes, we considered turning back, but I had a naive sense of hope in my heart so we continued.

It was only when we rolled up into the cliff-top car park and weren’t able to see the ocean right next to us that I realised this hopeful visit may have been a #fail. Literally it was just a wall of impenetrable white; no sea, no cliffs, no nothing.

Since we’d come all that way, we carried on our journey on the walk down to the cove (me still a little hopeful that I’d be able to see the iconic cliff stacks from the beach). Whilst no, this weather did not give Kynance the justice it deserves for my first visit, it certainly did look atmospheric.

I mean I definitely felt like I was heading down to the misty bay to catch a boat and escape a post-apocalyptic, potentially-zombie-infected Great Britain in search of safer shores. So there’s that.

We clambered along the beach and stopped in at the cafe for a coffee (and a delicious hot chocolate for me, of course – it wouldn’t be a Winter walk without one, right?), to admire the v….oh wait.

All jokes aside, it was an epic type of atmosphere and it was great to finally visit a place in Cornwall I’ve been dying to see for months, however, I definitely look forward to coming on a brighter day when I’ll be able to actually, y’know… see it.
