The Great Estate Festival at Scorrier House is one of Cornwall’s quirkiest festivals.
This month started with a bang, with the third edition of Great Estate festival welcoming over 19,000 people across the weekend! Each year I look forward to attending this crazy three day extravaganza, situated on the Scorrier House estate on the lawns and in the woodlands in front of the prestigious Cornish manor house.
Below are just a few of the reasons why I adore this rambunctious garden fête:
The Wacky Decor
No matter which way you turn, every tree, wall or patch of grass has some kind of decoration or curious character around it. Whether it’s bunting, twinkling fairy lights, candles, picture frames, vintage cars or other colourful odds and ends, this festival is a feast for the eyes!
People Watching
Speaking of, Great Estate is the PERFECT place for people watching! Everyone seems to love dressing up and going all out for this festival so expect to see a variety of crazy, off-the-wall outfits and costumes strolling around. This year we saw a group of people dressed in full 1800s dresses, hair and makeup!
Pimms All Day!
What says summer garden party like a cold glass of Pimms & lemonade? The Pimms bus is always the comfiest spot to hang out, with its own lounge area with deck chairs and cushions to chill out on and – you guessed it – people watch!
Hip Hop Karaoke
On the Saturday afternoon, we headed to the Madame Wong’s House of Wrong tent to watch the Hip Hop Karaoke, and it was one of the funniest moments of our weekend! Brave punters had signed up beforehand to rap along to old school Hip Hop, with the funniest host making sure the crowd all got involved too. Not as cringey as it sounds – everyone was actually really good!
The Incredible Food
Great Estate always have an amazing selection of delicious Cornish street food vans, but my absolute favourite is Woody’s Woodfired Pizza – they seem to do the rounds at lots of Cornwall festivals and honestly their pizza (baked in a woodfired stone oven) is my favourite pizza in the world… and trust me I eat a lot of pizza!
Workshops & Activities
You can’t ever get bored at Great Estate – there’s always some kind of wacky event or workshop going on that you can get involved in. This year they had Mexican Wrestling, a Victorian Style Sports Day, Swing Dancing, a Vintage Clothing Fair, Comedy Hours, Poetry Recitals, Skateboarding and much much more.
Secret Gin Garden
Hidden away through secret wardrobe doors and through a woodland pathway is the Secret Gin Garden, a walled garden dedicated to tasty gins and classical music. If you love gin, this is the perfect spot to hang out in the sunshine.
Discovering New Bands
This year we headed to the main stage in the early evening to watch Keir – who was absolutely amazing! His music reminded us a little bit of Nothing But Thieves, and his stage presence was nothing short of Freddy Mercury esque. I instantly went to follow him on Spotify, but can’t find a huge amount about these guys online other than their Facebook page.
Silent Disco
So Silent Discos are apparently my new favourite thing! Great Estate’s silent disco is particularly epic because it’s in the woodlands, and looks amazing due to the multicoloured lasers and disco balls in the trees. With three channels to choose from all playing the BEST tunes, there was something for everybody here.
If you want to find out more about the festival, or get your hands on their SUPER early bird tickets, head over to the Great Estate website.
Will you add Great Estate to your Cornish bucket list?
*We were kindly given complimentary festival tickets in exchange for promotions, but all thoughts are my own. It’s an awesome little festival!
