Lula in Hayle

Lunch on the Beach at Lula, Hayle

I love finding lunch spots and places to eat by the sea in Cornwall!

Recently Alex and I were down in Hayle taking some photos of a property for his business, and we decided while we were in the area that we should bring the dogs with us and have a walk along Hayle beach. I used to live fairly close to Hayle and come down all the time, either for a stroll down the King George memorial walk, or through the dunes and onto the beautiful white-sand beach!

I’d seen a few people on Instagram share some food they’d picked up as a takeaway from a cafe down here called Lula, so I wanted to give this a try too. Honestly, Instagram has a lot to answer to with me eating out such a lot…

We got there bang on 12pm, which is when Lula start serving lunch (they also serve breakfast from 8 – 11.30 too, which looks yummy!), and they actually serve food until about 8pm in the evening too – perfect for catching the sunset over Porthkidney/Lelant (the beach you can see on the other side of the Hayle estuary).

Lula describe themselves as a ‘beach shack’, and it has quite a cool modern wooden shed vibe going on! They have a one-way system at the moment due to COVID, and most of their seating is outside on the dune looking out over the edge of Hayle Towans beach.

We queued up and waited to be seated (it gets quite busy around lunch time, but worth a little wait!) – I actually quite liked their system of taking new customers to be seated and settled, and take their orders, before seating the next people. It’s nice because there’s nothing worse than being shown to your seat, hungry for food, and then being left there for ages before placing your food order!

We got some drinks and decided to share a few different dishes to try (although we ended up being quite full – our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs!).

I chose the jumbo shrimp with garlic butter, and sticky chicken wings, while Alex went for the fried chicken, and pulled pork ciabatta bun. All of it was super tasty, and it was so nice being sat on their comfy lounge chairs looking right out at the beach.

Lula is dog friendly and because it was quite hot, they brought over a bowl of water for them too to help them cool down. It was also the perfect location for Pepper to run straight into the sea once we were done! She loves lying around in the shallows like a hippo in the summer.

Please note that between July and end of August there is a seasonal dog ban between 10am – 6pm on this area of the beach, although dogs are still allowed in the Lula seating area between these times (just not allowed on the actual beach).
