There’s nothing quite like waking up to a sunrise over the ocean in a comfy hotel bed in Cornwall!
This is where we found ourselves last weekend, after a night’s stay at the beautiful Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth. This is one of my favourite hotels in Cornwall, due to its contemporary style and incredible location looking out at the water across Falmouth’s harbour.
Even though the building dates back to the 1600s and it is technically Falmouth’s oldest hotel, the feel inside is modern, yet cosy, and I love the subtle nautical decor they have in each space. Even though we only live 20 minutes away, I really feel like I’m holiday when we come here, which probably has something to do with the hotel being right on the water’s edge (its two AA rosette restaurant is literally names ‘The Water’s Edge’); it even has its own private pontoon!
This is why having a ‘getaway’ in your own local area is sometimes the best way to wind down and relax.
You’re still close enough to home that you know where you are and it’s not too much stress or effort packing up, but you’re in a new place that feels like a luxurious escape from busy day to day life.
The Greenbank have an offer on at the moment for Cornish locals who want to do just that! It’s called the ‘Doorstep Escape’ and from £99 you can book a night’s stay with breakfast, along with a cream tea or a couple of drinks in their downstairs pub, The Working Boat. You can upgrade this offer to stay in a specific room or suite, or to book dinner in the restaurant as well if you’d like.
During our mini staycation, we had a night in the fabulous ‘Florence Suite’; named after Florence Nightingale who stayed there in 1907! It is hands down my favourite hotel room in Cornwall that I’ve stayed in, and would highly recommend a night here if you are able to for a special occasion or treat. As an upgrade with the Doorstep Escape offer it’s a very reasonable price for a suite of this style; the decor and layout is beautiful, and the glass doors open up onto a spacious outdoors terrace with an unbeatable view of the ocean.
After an evening relaxing and enjoying being away from home (which is also our office!), we awoke in the morning to the most incredible sunrise bursting over Falmouth. I just couldn’t believe how stunning it was, and I never wanted to leave!

Even if you’re not staying in a suite or harbour view room, you can still enjoy the beautiful sea views from the hotel’s bar and ‘The Water’s Edge’ restaurant, where we sat in the morning for our breakfast (included in the ‘Doorstep Escape’ offer). There are plenty of classic continental alongside hot breakfast options, including a full Cornish breakfast or full vegan breakfast, however Alex opted for his new favourite, Eggs Benedict with bacon, and I spontaneously decided to have a boiled egg with soldiers (a simple fave of mine!).
Our stay was fantastic, and we definitely didn’t want to leave! As I say, it’s just so nice to step away from home for a night to decompress, and do the things you might not get a chance to in daily life. For example:
- Take a long bath with a book
- Have a date night in the hotel restaurant (without someone needing to be ‘designated driver’!)
- Enjoy a cocktail with a magazine or newspaper
- Take a walk around an area of town you’ve never explored before
- Or just take full advantage of your beautiful room with a movie and takeaway in bed!
