Have you ever been segway-ing before?
A couple of years ago, my mum was taken on a segway tour as a gift and she hasn’t stopped raving about it since. She insisted, and ended up buying Alex a pair of gift vouchers to try it for his birthday last year. Anyway, we finally got around to booking in our morning to give it a go last weekend…
We drove up to Waterside resort on the outskirts of Bodmin, where Segway Lakeview are located, run by husband and wife team, Ant and Jan. When we arrived we were fitted with helmets, before Ant took us outside to go through some basic training steps, such as how to get on and off the segway safely, how to turn, how to move forwards and stop.
I must admit I was super nervous, and it feels SO WEIRD when you first get on (everything in your brain is telling you the physics and tech won’t work and you definitely don’t want to be leaning forwards, even though you do), but Ant put us at ease so well with his patience and good humour.
^ You can see the concentration on my face π It definitely takes some getting used to!
The tour lasted for around 2 hours, and involved us going on various terrains and exploring different areas of Waterside’s old golf course, with some lots of different challenges and routes to try.
Alex (as with most things) took to it like a duck to water and was racing around trying all sorts of ramps and advanced techniques, while I took about an hour to get used to it and build my confidence before I would push myself to do those things.
But as I said, Ant was the best instructor with such a calming presence and showed us how to do everything safely and in best practices. Once I got going and felt confidence, I didn’t want to stop!
It was such a fun 2 hours and time really flew by. Segway Lakeview are open all year round and offer tours every day (including Sundays, which is when we went!), and you can do it in larger groups (up to 12 people) if you want to too, at Β£35 per person (or Β£30 for under 16s).
If you’re thinking about booking a segway experience, I’d definitely recommend going with these guys. They use top quality original branded Segways which are more rugged (for off-road exploring) and have additional safety features that some of the cheaper versions don’t have. Ant was really lovely but also very hot on safety and making sure we felt comfortable at all times; and having a good instructor for things like this always makes SUCH a difference.
I have recently tried this. My baby brother bought this and it’s amazing.
