Our Sunny, Safari Themed Nursery
As soon as we found out we’re having a baby boy this September, I immediately knew we had to go with a safari theme nursery!
Yes that’s right, if you’re a blog reader but haven’t seen my Instagram lately, Alex and I are extremely excited to be expecting a baby very soon! 🥰 As I enter my third trimester, I’ve really been enjoying pregnancy so far, and have loved gathering some bits together to create a nursery in our spare room.

This room before was pretty simple! We’re lucky to have the space for a double bed in here for a useful spare bedroom, but haven’t done much with it other than using it for (mainly) storage.
In an effort to add more useful storage space to the room, I hopped on Facebook marketplace on the hunt for a baby changing table, and managed to find this perfect-condition white Bromley dresser from Silver Cross (usually around ~£300) for £90 from a lovely local couple 😍.
With Alex’s help we brought it home and replaced the handles with these gold effect sunshine ones from Wilko, and we gave the room layout a reshuffle to create space for this. I also added this cute sunshine wall decal, and this lion wedge changing mat (Bobbin & Bumble) was a lovely gift from my (also pregnant) bestie Niki!
The toybox on the left is a large crate my mum found at an auction, which she painted with art deco patterns for us to use at our Gatsby wedding in November! I’m wondering whether to paint it to fit the nursery theme at some point, but will probably leave it as is for now.
At the moment, a lot of space in the room is being taken up by our spare bed, as we’re planning to keep this for at least the first 6 months while we use a ‘next-to-me’ cot (a ‘SnuzPod Studio’* borrowed from our friends Liv & Connor). So with the bed there and without a proper crib it might not look like a typical ‘nursery’ just yet, but the goal is we’ll take it in turns to sleep in this room with the baby in the cot, so that at least one of us can get a full night’s sleep in our master bedroom.
(Although it might mainly be me depending on how breastfeeding & combi-feeding goes 😅!)
With that said, one of big worries has been the temperature of this nursery room! Alex and I both like to be in a freezing cold room to sleep (often having a window open AND a fan on even in winter!), but obviously this isn’t the ideal climate for a newborn baby… So we were trying to get our heads around how either of us would be able to sleep in this room without overheating or being uncomfortable when we’re so used to the cold, especially when our spare bed duvet is so thick and heavy!
I was therefore extremely happy when sleep-tech brand, Simba, got in touch for us to try their Hybrid Duvet! (Also, can we appreciate how well the name ‘Simba’ fits with the theme? 😏). They very kindly sent it to me to review and I’m so glad because I feel this was the answer we were looking for for a cool-yet-cosy night’s sleep!
This Simba Duvet is specifically designed for year-round use with its Stratos ‘cool-touch’ technology. It feels soft and luxurious with a 10.5 Tog warmth and down-like filler, but feels fresh (and non-sweaty/sticky!) at night thanks to its cotton ‘cool-touch’ layers – the dream!
Plus it’s also fully machine washable (and able to actually FIT in ours, unlike our old duvet…) and has square stitching to prevent that annoying clumping that happens to the filling on some duvets when you wash it. Perfect for low maintenance in our baby room, where who knows what might get spilled on it 👀.
Should we need some extra warmth I bought this yellow bed-spread from Dunelm too (similar here*), although this was mainly to add some bright colour to the room so really bring out those sunny vibes!
I bought a pack of white frames* for above the bed, and wanted some fun and colourful ‘safari’/animal themed prints to go in these. The monkey with headphones print is from Desenio!
On the wall as you walk in, I bought some white floating shelves to add some storage and cute decoration to the room, and I’m so pleased with how these look now! I raided my mum’s attic where she has luckily kept a whole host of old toys and books from our childhood, and found the perfect additions to brighten up the space!
Literally all of these books and toys (except for the 3 small plush animals – a recent gift from my bestie Olivia!) are from my childhood, which is such a nice touch and I can’t wait to share these with our son.
I still have some coloured bunting I’d like to hang at the top of this wall above the prints (but not sure how to best to do that!), and a mirror and shelf to hang above the toybox and changing table, but other than that, I think the room is nearly ready to welcome our new arrival very soon 🥰.
