Fine dining Japanese food at TA-KUMI Marbella in Spain

TA-KUMI Review: Fine Dining Japanese Food in Marbella

On a recent trip to Spain, we ended up having one of the best meals of our lives at an incredible Japanese restaurant in Marbella – TA-KUMI!

After booking a last minute couple of days away to a little port town near Marbella in Spain, I was on the hunt for a really nice restaurant to take Alex to for his birthday when I came across TA-KUMI.

Alex and I LOVE Japanese food – it’s our favourite (and one of the main reasons for our trip to Japan in 2020!), so when I stumbled across this Michelin-listed restaurant I decided the tasting menu looked incredible and this would be my treat for him for his 30th.

We got a taxi into Marbella for the evening, walked around the old town and enjoyed a little glass of sangria on the seafront first, before then heading to TA-KUMI. Walking in, we loved the minimal zen-style decor and open kitchen, and immediately got excited by the cocktail menu. I opted for the Sake Mojito and Alex chose the Wasabi Mule, while we were treated to a delicious salmon and seaweed crisp ‘amuse bouche’.

The first official dish of our tasting menu was the oyster in panko crumbs and ponzu sauce, which tasted as beautiful as it looked. This was followed by one of my fave dishes of the evening – the tuna tartare with quail egg yolk and truffle!

I’m not normally a tuna tartare fan, but this was incredible. Every dish throughout the evening was brought over and presented to us on its own stand, and for this dish they brought out a whole truffle and grated it over the dish right in front of us. I’ve never seen a ‘whole’ truffle before, and would never have thought this flavour would ‘go’ with an asian dish or tuna, but it was *chefs kiss* 🙌🏼.

Our next platter was beautifully simple – red prawn sashimi with a miso sauce – and before our ‘mains’ they came out and made fresh wasabi in front of us right next to our table! Again, I’d never seen a ‘whole’ wasabi root before, and didn’t realise how they made wasabi paste, so it was awesome to see them do this from scratch. The whole thing felt like such an experience!

Our sashimi dish came out looking utterly stunning, and was some of the best fish we’ve had too. Buttery soft salmon, speciality fatty tunas and white scale fish – we really savoured each bite.

Next was probably Alex’s favourite – a selection of Nigiri! We started out with 3 each with salmon, tuna and sea bass (I *think* but it could have been another white fish as I have forgotten!), and they then brought out a further 3 pieces each, but this time came and seared them all at the table.

And finally we ended our savoury courses with a black cod and miso plate, and finished with an incredible lime & white chocolate mousse dessert and petit fours.

The service (particularly at the end start of the evening) was fantastic too – with the whole experience going on by our table, an open kitchen and fine dining waiting service, it felt like such a luxurious, VIP evening.

If you love Japanese food – particularly sushi! – you will absolutely love TA-KUMI and I can’t recommend it enough :) I’m so glad I found it, and Alex had the best evening too which is a winner!
