This little island on the coast of Elounda/Agios Nikolaos is not only absolutely stunning (accessed by boat through crystal clear waters) but also steeped in a saddening yet fascinating history. ⁠
⁠
Originally used as a fortress in the Venetian/Ottoman war, at the beginning of the 1900s it became home to over 1000 people suffering with leprosy, with nowhere else to go. ⁠
⁠
Today, you can walk around the cobbled streets and view the forts, as well as old houses, chapels, shops and cafes that the leper colony built for their lives here on the island. ⁠

The other week we visited the @screech_owl_sanctuary near Newquay and had the best time learning about all the different species of owls - plus hanging out with loads of other animals too, including:⁠

🐦 Emus⁠
🐐 Goats⁠
🦊 Foxes⁠
😺 Meerkats⁠
and more!⁠

Plus there's a playground for kids and a very tasty cafe on-site too 👏🏼⁠

We went with my two cousins (age 12 and 15) who both love animals and they loved it 🥰⁠

I left Cornwall age 16 because I wanted to be a ‘city girl’ 😅

But it took leaving to realise how lucky I had been growing up in Cornwall, and less than 3 years later I came ✨home✨.
