Vegan Porridge

My 5 Favourite (Vegan) Porridge Combos

I feel almost absurdly British when I say the word ‘porridge’.

It probably comes from the fact of spending too much time on the internet with American food bloggers flooding Pinterest and YouTube with their ‘oatmeal’ recipes. Calling it ‘porridge’ feels like I’m telling a fairtytale involving a group of bears and one really fussy eater.

So yeah, I’m sorry if this confuses anyone who is not British, but porridge is oatmeal. They are one and the same… unless I’ve severely confused myself.

Recently I’ve been experimenting with different flavours and combinations in my morning bowl of porridge, and I wanted to share some of my favourites because HOT DAMN I’ve hit the jackpot with some of these…

1. Banana & Peanut Butter Porridge

Banana and Peanut Butter Porridge

When I discovered the immense delicious-ness of peanut butter in porridge, I was almost kinda cross. Like, why had no one told me about this fabulous combination before?? Adding half a mashed banana and half chopped banana adds the sweetness to the creamy peanut buttery goodness, fyi :)

  • Porridge oats
  • Almond milk
  • 1 banana (half mashed, half chopped)
  • 1 and a half tbsp of thick peanut butter
  • (Chia seeds for some added calcium, magnesium and Omega-3 – but not necessary!)

2. Spiced Apple Porridge

Spiced Apple Porridge

The ultimate Autumnal breakfast. I realise I’m posting this in the wrong season, but hey – apples are always delicious, right? I think Spring is a perfectly acceptable time to crave hot cinnamon flavoured things…

  • Porridge oats
  • Almond milk
  • 1 chopped apple
  • Tsp cinnamon
  • Half tsp nutmeg
  • Half tsp ginger
  • (A wee bit of maple syrup if you like it extra sweet!)

3. Chocolate Raspberry Porridge

Um so this may be the best breakfast you’ve ever had in your life. I mean, who doesn’t want to eat chocolate for breakfast? And because you’re getting fibre and fruit involved it doesn’t feel like a bad lifestyle choice either.

I’ve found this is an epic combination if it’s that ‘time of the month’ and you’re craving something sweet, warming and chocolatey. It totally hits the spot!

  • Porridge oats
  • Almond milk
  • A good handful of raspberries
  • 1 tbsp of fair trade cocoa powder (you can probably find specific vegan cocoa – or cacao if you’re super fancy – but I used Green & Blacks who seem 99% sure that they don’t use milk in their ingredients…)
  • A sprinkle of dark chocolate/dairy free chocolate chips

4. Blueberry & Coconut Porridge

Blueberry Coconut Porridge

This is definitely more of a refreshing Spring combo, and really is just a hot gloopy version of banana and blueberry pancakes… but in a good way! I also get far too much enjoyment from the fact that the hot blueberries turn the porridge pink…

  • Porridge oats
  • Almond milk
  • Half a mashed or chopped banana (however you like it!)
  • A good handful of blueberries
  • 1 and a half tbsp desiccated coconut

5. Pear & Almond Porridge

I freaking love pears. Is that a weird thing to love? Maybe. But seriously I could eat them all day, and the fact that they taste amazing when they’re hot and mushy is a bonus because I can add them to my breakfast in a creamy, almond-y mess.

  • Porridge oats
  • Almond milk
  • 1 chopped pear
  • 1 tsp cinammon
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • A small handful of flaked almonds

  1. Oooh Anna, these recipes look marvellous!! I eat porridge every morning with almond milk – it’s my absolute favourite.

This week I’ve loved having mine with raisin, cinnamon and chopped plums. (I soak the oaks in almond milk overnight, and the raisins too – that way the raisins are plumped up and juicy in the morning!).

I also love heating my porridge up with a sprinkling of mixed spice, and then chopping up a satsuma and stirring it into my porridge. Delicious!

I will be trying your chocolate porridge this weekend – it looks so good.

    :)

  2. Definitely back to porridge weather at the moment! Must try your Coconut and Blueberry recipe, looks delish :) My favourite right now is cashew milk, pecan, chia, coconut flakes and maple syrup, sooo good.

  3. These recipes look fantastic! I love making different combinations as I’m a big fan of oats with almond milk. Thanks for setting things right, I never knew that porridge is basically the same thing as oatmeal :). You have a lovely blog and love reading it! I don’t know if you’re a vegan or not, but I hope to see more vegan food porn around.

    Have a lovely summer day

    1. Thanks so much Monica I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying my vegan posts! :) I’m not vegan (yet!) but try to cut down on dairy where I can and I no longer eat meat, so don’t worry there will be plenty more vegan posts to come I’m sure! x

  4. I just like to point out only in America do they say oatmeal!
We say porridge here in Australia, in new Zealand, my Asian friends say porridge.
Porridge can be any grain meal that is cooked with water into a slip, you can have rice, oat, barley porridge, anything that is grain.
Oatmeal is a refined powdered grain that has reduced the oats into a grain so they cook faster, it is also, a brand name. You are literally using a product name rather than the original term, porridge.
