Nights like these make me think vegan food might just be the best food there is.
I’m not even kidding! I know the meat-eaters out there will be skeptical but honestly this was one of the most delicious meals I’ve had in ages.
This weekend, The Front Room (a quirky, intimate cafe/bar in the heart of Penzance) teamed up with brand new vegan food van, Vood Bar, for an evening of feasting. I first heard about the event on the Cornwall Vegan’s Facebook group, and I was so excited for more vegan food options here in Cornwall that I jumped at the chance to attend!
We were greeted with delicious Pina Coladas and seated feast-style amongst The Front Room’s cosy decor. With fairy lights, lanterns and candelabras, I loved the home-away-from-home feel.
This may sound weird, but the toilets are a must-see here!! I won’t spoil the surprise…
After gorging ourselves (probably too much!) on delicious breads, oils and drips, our satay vegetable skewers arrived. For those who don’t know, satay is my favourite sauce EVER and I can be quite fussy with it, but my God this was some of the best satay I’ve tried and the whole table agreed! We hoarded our pot of sauce for our next course…
…which was BBQ jackfruit burger; it’s basically a fake pulled pork and I’ve been dying to try it since I saw it on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch a few months ago. It did not disappoint either! The texture is SO much like pork, and the jackfruit basically absorbs whatever flavour you give it so it was pure barbecue-y heaven.
Our eyes widened as we were brought YET MORE FOOD in the form of delicious potato and coconut curry which was also delicious, however we were all verging on full but knew there were some tasty desserts yet to come…
^ Olivia’s wheat-free needs were catered for perfectly! And check out the cute umbrella dish!
Yes, not one but 3 full sized desserts each appeared before us! A blueberry sponge, chocolate watermelon slices and the most heavenly cherry & chocolate tart (I am still dreaming about this tart). All served with vegan ice cream too.
So, we basically ate three peoples’ worth of food, each! We definitely left in an almost comatose state of full-ness, but in the best way possible.
Danielle, the brains behind Vood Bar, has spent the last year or so setting up her vegan food van business and has recently secured a long-term contract to trade on Penzance Pier, so go visit her when you’re next in the area! Check out their website and Facebook page for more info.
It’s so exciting to see so many new vegan dining options popping up around Cornwall, and Penzance is definitely becoming a hub for it! With The Front Room’s new ownership comes new menu choices for vegan cooked breakfasts and chocolate cake too, so you’re spoilt for choice on your day out. It’s such a cosy little cafe with a fun vibe, so I’d definitely recommend it for a relaxing afternoon. Find out more about their menu on their website!
Who else would totally go vegan for this?
