Cycle Trails in Cornwall

4 Cycle Trails to Try in Cornwall

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve never been much of a cyclist.

I think I only really learned how to bike properly around age 10, and we just didn’t go out cycling enough for me to ever practice and get ‘good’. To this day I’m really unsteady on two wheels and can barely make it up a slope, BUT I still enjoy it as a way of getting outdoors and exploring while getting some exercise in! Hence why, this weekend just gone, I decided to make Alex and our friends Frankie and Josh to go on a bike ride around Pentewan.

It’s been on my list for a while, and we had a lovely afternoon! It’s got me inspired to try some of Cornwall’s other well known trails too…

Pentewan Cycle Trail

1. The Camel Trail

Cornwall’s most famous bike trail that I am yet to try! I’m desperate to plan a day out exploring the Camel Trail, as it’s well known for being super flat and easy, with beautiful seaside views. The whole trail is 18 miles and spans from Wenfordbridge and Bodmin all the way to Padstow and Wadebridge, but you can hop in at different bits.

2. Pentewan Valley Trail

You can either cycle from Pentewan to St. Austell and on to Eden Project, or from Pentewan to Mevagissey which is what we did. It was quite hilly so we ended up walking a few bits but not impossible for a total cycling novice like me! We took Maizy the dog along with us and she absolutely loved running along with us on the bikes.

The only sad thing about it was that we couldn’t finish our cycle with a drink by the beach because the whole of the Pentewan Sands resort (including the beach and all the restaurants) aren’t dog friendly.

3. Bissoe Trail

We literally live right next to the start of the Bissoe Cycle Trail, and end up walking bits of it at least twice a week to walk the dogs! It’s been on my list for ages to hire a bike and cycle all the way to Portreath though… I think some parts are quite challenging but I’m definitely up for making a day of it.

4. The Great Flat Lode

The Great Flat Lode is part of the old Mineral Tramways that are now fantastic walking and cycling trails all around Cornwall’s central mining districts. This is a 7.5 mile circular trail and I’ve heard it’s fantastic for seeing some of Cornwall’s mining heritage in the heart of the county.

Have you ever been on these trails? Are there more Cornwall trails you’d like to add? Leave your suggestions below, I’d love to hear them!
