Coombe to Old Kea: Circular Walk Near Truro
Last Saturday afternoon, Alex and I decided to head out on an adventure and try out a walk we’ve never done before.
After a bit of Googling, I discovered a circular walk nearby us close to Truro along the edge of the Truro river. Excited to find somewhere so close to us that we could potentially come back to regularly, we packed up the dogs and set out to find this spot.
We drove to the little hamlet of Coombe, and parked up on the side of the street. It could potentially be quite a popular walking route during summer, so best get there early to be sure there’s some space!
As we got out of the car and found the footpath entrance by the water and started to walk up the hill, we could just about make out signs of some wild camping on the nearby quay! It looked like there was a little tent pitched up and a campfire going – what a dreamy way to start a Saturday.

The dogs had a great time sniffing about in the hedges amongst the woodland, and exploring all the fields we walked through. They love going to new places and get so excited!
We passed some beautiful country houses on our walk too, with the most quintessentially ‘English Country Gardens’ you’ve ever seen, before heading down the hill through a field into Old Kea.
Here we found Old Kea church and Tower – an old monastery ruin which looked absolutely beautiful all covered in ivy hiding amongst the trees! Apparently this old place of worship dates back to Medieval times, and certainly looks very gothic.
After this, we walked up to the road that joins back down into Coombe where we left the car, and headed home. However there is an extended version of this circular loop walk that also takes you down into a place called Cowlands, where you can see more of the river I believe.
The shortened version we did took about 2 hours in total, but we were taking a very leisurely pace with the dogs, but the full route is just under 7km apparently.

Your walk in Coombe, did it have steep hills? I’m ok with gradients but not very steep hills.
