Seaview Dining at The Summer House Restaurant in Perranporth

Last week marked the opening of Perranporth’s latest establishment, The Summer House restaurant.

I’d been hearing buzz about two new spots opening up in this seaside town for a couple of months, and when Danny said he’d booked four of us in for a meal on opening night I was really excited to try it out!

Owned by the same family as The Watering Hole (Perranporth’s famous bar & cafe nestled in the dunes, who host awesome live music and events throughout the year) and brand new bar, Alcatraz (which sits just below The Summer House looking out to the beach), The Summer House is a chilled tapas restaurant by day, and a 3-course, more ‘fine dining’ style spot by night.

It’s newly built, situated right on the little cliff that sticks out into the beach, beneath the new seaview apartments. It’s a spectacular location, and they have huge windows and a sunny decked outdoor area where you can sit and enjoy the full benefits of the view too.

Inside, the decor is really modern with an art deco twist. I absolutely love the dark blue velvet booths, and bronze accents, which gives it a really luxury feel, while at the same time feeling relaxed with plenty of wood and natural lighting.

The menu is really concise, which I personally love! It’s so overwhelming when there’s pages and pages of things to choose from, and I like how they laid everything out in different sections for fish, meat and vegetarian options.

Price-wise I’d say it’s reasonable for the quality and the presentation of what you get, and exactly what you would usually expect from a restaurant in this type of location. In fact, if you compare it to somewhere like Gylly Beach cafe in Falmouth, which is more expensive, it’s actually very good value!

For starters, everyone went for the pork cheek terrine, while I of course chose the mackerel option. Alex was quite jealous of my dish I think; it was light and refreshing but tasty at the same time.

They have a good wine list at The Summer House, and of course we ended up having a bottle or two between the four of us (oops!). While we opted to try a more expensive German wine, they did have a good range of price options, and other drinks to choose from too.

Again, the consensus for main course was the duck breast, which did look delicious! But I opted for the hake with minted Cornish potatoes. It was tasty but pretty filling, and although I would have really liked to try one of their desserts (chocolate brownie anyone??), we simply couldn’t fit any in.

The Summer House is open for lunch (tapas menu) and dinner every day, and while they do allow dogs on leads in their outdoor decked seating area, those tables can’t be reserved, so just be aware! You can easily book a table indoors between 6 and 9pm on their website.

I’m really glad somewhere like this has come to Perranporth; before, if you wanted to decide where to eat there were mostly cafes, fish & chip shops and pubs. The Watering Hole is good for food and drinks but it is quite basic, so having a more sophisticated restaurant like The Summer House open up will be great for the town!
