The dunes at Gwithian are my go-to place to walk the dog on days like this.
When it’s been raining all week, all our favourite woodland and countryside walks are either flooded or insanely muddy, and sometimes the tide is just not in our favour, meaning all the beaches aren’t available either. At times like these, the towans are our only saviour!
The dunes here stretch for over 3 miles, and there are so many twists and turns to get lost in (we frequently get lost up there trying to find our way back to the car…), so it’s a good long walk to tire Pepper out too. Plus the bonus is she doesn’t get muddy – meaning I don’t have to wrestle her into a bath after our walk!
^ Pepper’s feelings about baths
On this day, even though it was exactly high tide when we went, there was still a sliver of beach for Pepper to run around on! I guess maybe sometimes it doesn’t go all the way up to the dunes unless it’s stormy. Again, this was great for tiring the pooch out!
^ It’s not a great photo as it was kind of misty, but in the distance on that rock sits Godrevy lighthouse! When the tide is out you can walk all the way along the beach to Godrevy, which is a great beach if you love rockpooling, by the way!
I think we must have managed to catch the only glimpse of sun in nearly week, and as soon as we got home the storm started up again with wind and rain, so I’m glad we got out when we did!
I’ve put together a short 2 minute video of our morning at Gwithian towans too, on my YouTube channel:

Gwithian’s my favourite Cornish beach. It’s where we used to go when I was a kid. I loved (still do) playing on the rocks and the sandy gullies between them. We’ve got a jar of Gwithian sand at home. It’s a great photography location too, especially in the spring when the thrift is out on the clifftop.
