Gylly Beach in January (Bank Holiday Sunshine)

Sometimes you just wake up and have a craving for a good prawn sandwich.

Today was one of those days.

After a long dog walk in the morning, we popped down to Falmouth for a light lunch at Gylly Beach Cafe (one of my favourite eateries by the sea)! The views over Gyllyngvase beach today were stunning; not a cloud in the sky and a glistening, Winter ocean.

But damn, it was busy.

Gylly Beach Cafe is always pretty busy to be honest – like many of Cornwall’s beach-based cafs, it oozes a ‘cool’ vibe and attracts a loyal crowd as well as excited tourists.

We opted for their avocado and prawn sandwiches with a side of chunky chips to share; yum. Always tasty, and (despite the busy-ness this bank holiday) always quick!

The only thing about this cafe that I’ve noticed before is the wifi and internet signal… there is none. In one way, I totally understand and actually quite like it; it forces you to be present and not messing around on your phone while you eat.

However, as someone who likes to take my laptop out to places for the occasional work afternoon, it’s also annoying. I’d love to take my work there, looking out to sea feeling inspired, but I can’t without internet.

But again, maybe that’s deliberate! No annoying hipsters like me sat on their computers…

After our lunch we went for a stroll on the beach. As I said, it was super busy (dogs and children everywhere), but also incredibly cold.

January has come full force with freezing weather. After a seriously mild December, I’d almost forgot what Winter felt like – but now I know. Hats and gloves are no longer optional folks.

Interesting fact about Gyllyngvase: it came out top in our blogger’s ‘Ultimate Best Beaches in Cornwall’ poll in 2015! At that point, I’d only ever been once or twice in my life, but now I feel like it’s becoming one of my fave hang out spots. Swimming here in Summer is like being abroad, so calm and Mediterranean-feeling.

It was also where I tried stand-up paddleboarding for the first time in the Summer with Olivia, which was so fun and I’m excited to spend 2017 doing more of that! Maybe on a day when there’s less surf though…

At around 4pm the sun started to set (casting beautiful silhouettes across the beach) and the temperature started to drop (a little too low for my liking), so we hopped back in the car to head home, bellies and camera memory cards full!
