In a follow up to my ‘TV Series’ on Netflix‘ post, here’s a list of some incredible films you should watch while they’re on still Netflix, and while the weather’s still crap…
These are based on my preferences for dark thrillers, smart, subtle humour, and films that make you think too hard.
1. Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
I saw this in the cinema when it came out, and bought it on DVD as soon as it was released.
Matthew McConaughey is amazing as he plays AIDS sufferer Ron who starts a business selling medication to fellow patients. It’s eye-opening, especially for someone who didn’t realise the stigma AIDS came with in 80s America.
But the best part for me was Jared Leto playing transvestite, Rayon. His performance is incredible, and I promise it will bring you to tears.
2. Into the Wild (2007)
This film was unexpected. I’d never heard of it before, and watched it randomly one evening when I had nothing else to do.
American graduate, Christopher gets rid of everything he owns and donates his savings to charity before travelling to Alaska on his own, meeting lots of different people on the way.
It’s a beautiful, touching film, and will probably give you Wanderlust and make you question what you’re doing with your life.
3. Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie Darko is, and always will be, my all-time favourite film. It’s somewhat of a cult classic, so if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend that you do now while it’s still on the Netflix database.
It’s weird, confusing, and you won’t understand it first time round. I’ve watched it many times and still have to research it’s true meaning and intent on various forums to fully understand it.
If for nothing else, watch it for Jake Gyllenhaal’s best work.
4. Filth (2013)
I seriously wanted to see this when it came out in cinemas, but never got the chance, so I was thrilled when I found it on Netflix.
It’s raunchy, funny, dark and twisted, and reminds me a lot of Trainspotting, but with less drugs and disturbing bits. James McAvoy is always awesome, but I think this is his best yet.
5. Jackie Brown (1997)
This is my favourite Quentin Tarantino film by far, and I can’t count how many times I’ve watched it. I own the soundtrack too because trust me, it’s incredible. Thank you Netflix for providing me with another platform on which to watch it!
Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro provide the laughs, while Pam Grier as Jackie Brown (the strong independent woman) provides the sass. She is possibly my favourite female character ever?
6. Shutter Island (2010)
We all know that Leonardo DiCaprio is an absolute legend, so if you haven’t seen this film you really should if you want to experience his awesomeness from a different angle.
It’s a dark thriller verging on horror, with the best twist ever at the end, although I’m pretty awful at predicting plot twists so you may not think it’s such a big deal.
Any films you think I’ve missed? Please do recommend me more great things to watch on Netflix, because I really do have too much time on my hands…
Into the Wild is sooo good! I read the book as well. It makes me a little sad though, but his story is fascinating.

I was nearly in tears by the end of it, but it is an amazing story. I may need to read the book now! x
Into The Wild is an incredible movie but my gooood I LOVE Shutter Island. Up until today I still feel like you can have two opinions on how it ends haha.

YES! I’m so glad you think that, because N is always trying to convince me it’s definitely one thing, but I honestly think it could be either, and that’s what makes it so brilliant :) x
Into the Wild and Donnie Darko are two of my favourite films. I haven’t seen the others but I may have to give them a watch :)
Well if those are your two favourite films then it sounds like we have pretty similar tastes! Would definitely recommend Shutter Island to start with x
Oooh I have been meaning to watch Into the Wild for such a long time! Thanks for reminding me :) x
