Šibenik & Krka Waterfalls
Our trip to the Krka Waterfalls might just be my favourite thing I’ve ever done!
Yep, I said it. I think the only thing that comes close would be our river rafting trip a few years ago, which also happened to be in Croatia – what a damn amazing country!
During our recent holiday to Croatia, we booked a day trip to see the infamous waterfalls in this stunning national park a few hours in land from Split. Despite having to be up at the crack of dawn to get on a (nearly 3 hour long) bus transfer to the park, we had a great day, stopping off at a historic old city called Šibenik.
Here, the river Krka meets the Adriatic in a beautiful, sheltered port lined with beautiful cobbled streets. The city is host to a Gothic/Renaissance style cathedral which is actually on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to the incredible way it’s built – there is no cement in the entire building! The stone slabs are designed to lock together in a way that meant cement wasn’t needed for the build; apparently this makes very stable (if not a little bit leaky…).
The whole old town part of the city is incredibly quaint and beautiful, and you could easily spend a few hours there exploring the narrow cobbled streets and popping into the many boutique shops there – but we only had an hour so we rushed through (taking photos along the way of course!).

Apparently Šibenik is quite a popular tourist destination during the peak months, although it seemed pretty quiet when we were there! I’d definitely recommend a visit though – just watch out for that Medieval torture…
Back on the bus we continued our trip to the Krka National Park – and what a stunning drive that was! As always I bagsed the window seat (sorry N!) so I could take some snaps of the winding roads down towards the river.

We went straight to the Skradinski buk area where the large waterfalls spill down the landscape and into a lagoon at the bottom where you can go swimming!
It looks like a relaxing swim but in fact it was very slippery and rocky underfoot (as you may be able to tell from all my stumbling around in the video…). The water was fresh and cool but not too cold so we spent a while navigation the rocks and trying to stay upright against the current!
Once we’d had a dip, we explored the rest of the area along the wooden plank board-walk, stopping to admire the breathtaking views and various lagoons we found along the way…
If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, I can’t recommend this excursion enough! It’s definitely an item to add to your bucket list…
Croatia is SO in my travel list, I’ve been to Pula before on a college trip, but it was quite shot and we didn’t have the freedom to explore. We’re thinking about going in the autumn, in replace of a trip to Vietnam (somewhere we’re both so keen to go to but after lots of research realised that the autumn is their rainy season…oops!) Amazing! :) We didn’t AirBNB, we went for an all inclusive hotel (Sensimar Adriatic Resort) however I have stayed there previously in an apartment in Omis and that was lovely! Nice and close to Split which is beautiful :) Also if you stay near Split you’ll be near to the River Cetina where you can go white water rafting – which is an amazing experience! Xx
