Iconic Cornwall: Castles in the Sea

This is only going to be a quick post, but I just had to share these photos!

St. Michael’s Mount is truly the most incredible place, and one of Cornwall’s most famous landmarks (if not the most famous? Debate!). This tidal island in Mount’s Bay at the edge of Marazion is home to a beautiful castle and gardens dating back to the 12th century.

I’ve been on the island a handful of times; when the tide is out, you can walk along the causeway to visit the island. There’s a harbour and tea room, but of course the main attraction is the castle and gardens. I’ve been a handful of times but not recently and it’s definitely on my list! It’s a great place to take families too.

When I was younger our parents told us that there was a giant who lived on the island and that there was a stone half way up the steps to the castle that you can touch and hear the giant’s heart beat. We passed this story onto my young cousin but ended up scaring her silly because she thought the giant would come and eat her (what is it with Cornwall and children-eating giants??).

Anyway, on this day my friends and I headed down in the evening to catch the sunset. We didn’t realise that it would literally be peak high tide when we visited but it worked out fine and made for even more epic photos. The sky was an incredible colour too!
