Falmouth Cornwall Guide

18+ Best Things To Do in Falmouth in 2026 (from a local!)

Falmouth has always been one of my favourite places in Cornwall, and I’m incredibly grateful to live only 15 minutes away from this beautiful Cornish town.

Whether you’re a beach lover, shopping addict, music lover, artist or foodie, there are so many fun and unique things to do in Falmouth. It really has it all as far as British coastal towns go!

In this guide to Falmouth I’ll be sharing my top tips and places, and why I love it here so much as a local.

Why is Falmouth so popular?

Falmouth is most well known because of its rich maritime history – hosting the third deepest natural harbour in the world, the famous fortress or Pendennis castle, tales of 15th century pirates, and sailing events hosted here each year.

This Cornish coastal town is also home to Falmouth University (part of University of Exeter), which is top-rated across the country for its Art & Design programs.

I definitely think being a university / student town adds to the character and vibrancy of Falmouth, but of course it’s also a beautiful destination for Cornish seaside holiday makers as well.

What is Falmouth famous for?

Where to stay in Falmouth & surrounding areas

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Falmouth, you’ll be spoilt for choice! It can be overwhelming when sifting through all the options, so below are some of my top picks:

The Greenbank Hotel, in Falmouth

Perfect for: couples
This beautifully restored 17th century building on the water’s edge proudly holds the title of Falmouth’s oldest hotel, and is actually one of my favourite hotels in Cornwall!

The Greenbank feels luxurious and contemporary, yet still steeped in nautical history, and boasts its own private pontoon, its own pub, and a two AA rosette restaurant as well.

We stayed at The Greenbank Hotel a few years ago for my birthday and couldn’t get over the stunning ‘Florence Suite’. Highly recommend!

The Valley Cottages, nr. Falmouth (15 minute drive)

Perfect for: families
The Valley is tucked away in the nearby village of Carnon Downs, providing the perfect luxury self-catered escape for families and those looking for a ‘home from home’!

Stay in your own stone-built 2 or 3 bedroom cottage (some dog friendly, and some with hot tubs!), and enjoy the best kind of holiday amenities such as indoor & outdoor pools, squash and tennis courts, games room and on-site restaurant.

All set within the beautiful countryside with easy access to central Cornwall and a short drive to Falmouth.

Activities & Things To Do in Falmouth

Below are a selection of things to do in Falmouth, with a mixture of free and paid activities, ones for families and couples, and for different weather conditions too!

Visit one of Falmouth’s stunning beaches

The main beach in Falmouth is Gylly – with stunning yellow sand and crystal clear waters on a summer’s day. You can easily walk along the coast path over to Swanpool beach as well, which is great for swimming or hiring a kayak to explore hidden caves and coves.

If you kept walking for a longer hike, you’d next come to Maenporth beach – or this is a short drive if you’d prefer. Again, a fairly sheltered beach that’s great for swimming and watersports!

Walk around Kimberley park or gylly gardens

If you’re heading to Falmouth with babies or young kids, there are some lovely gardens and parks / playgrounds to explore around Falmouth that are very pram friendly too. Baby Friendly Cornwall is the best place to check out more places and things to do with babies in Cornwall!

Explore the fortress of Pendennis Castle

If you like your history, Pendennis Castle is a must-see. I’m not personally into castles, but this one is pretty impressive, and there are loads of different spots to explore around! Not to mention the beautiful views over Falmouth harbour.

Hire a SUP or kayak

As I mentioned, you can hire a kayak from any of Falmouth’s beaches, or a stand up paddleboard from Gylly beach. There are loads of cool caves and secret coves to explore around this area of the coast if you do.

Kayaking at Swanpool

Discover a festival

Falmouth LOVES a festival – whether it’s an arts, food, comedy or film festival, the famous Sea Shanty Festival, or the classic ‘Falmouth Week’ which sees plenty of music and sailing events, there’s always so much going on in this town!

See Falmouth by river

Exploring River Fal and Truro River is lots of fun – there is so much to see along the coastline. You can hire self-drive or guided boats from Falmouth if this sounds like your jam!

Wander around art galleries

As a hub for the arts (thanks largely to Falmouth University!), Falmouth has lots of cute art galleries to wander around. There is the larger Falmouth Art Gallery to visit, or why not try my new fave – Morgans Falmouth.

Falmouth art galleries

Get close to nature with a wildlife cruise or diving trip

Head out on a boat trip to discover some amazing marine wildlife with AK Wildlife Cruises, or get your PADI certification with Cornish Diving.

Go cafe hopping & shopping

Falmouth is GREAT for this because of the range of cute independent shops and cafes to explore. I’ve listed some of my favourites below in the ‘best restaurants in Falmouth’ and ‘best shops in Falmouth’ section of this post.

Stroll along the coast path

It’s really easy to get onto the South West Coast Path directly from Gylly beach. You can walk along to Swanpool, and even further to Maenporth and around to Helford river if you fancy a longer hike!

Learn the nautical history at the National Maritime Museum

This is a great rainy day activity for the whole family, as there are usually interactive activities and exhibitions going on in this impressive space!

Take the ferry to St. Mawes

For just a few £, you can catch a little ferry boat from the Price of Wales Pier in Falmouth, and take a day trip for a few hours to the picturesque seaside town of St. Mawes.

The Best Shops in Falmouth

Aside from the obvious high street stores, Falmouth is full of gorgeous independent boutiques. Some of which I’ve listed below, but also plenty more that I don’t know the name of that are waiting for you to stumble upon through the various streets of the town.

Willow & Stone

Traditionally an ironmongery  for door hardware, Willow & Stone also sells beautiful, natural homeware items and gifts.

Un_Rap

Tucked away on Webber Hill, un_rap is Falmouth’s zero waste store, great for restocking your cupboards and switching to eco-friendly lifestyle items.

The Bean Hive Shop Falmouth

The Bean Hive by The Sea

This shop absolutely scratches an itch in my brain! If you love retro, bright colours and CUTE home, fashion and lifestyle stuff, you have to visit The Bean Hive – it’s my new fave!

Ondine Ash

There are a few realllly pretty homeware & lifestyle shops on the High Street in Falmouth, and Ondine Ash is definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing, vibey places to find your next treasure.

The Best Restaurants & Cafes in Falmouth

As with the shops, there are too many restaurants and cafes in Falmouth to count – but here are some of my top favourites!

Bookoos

Bookoos’ first restaurant was actually in Helston, and they are known throughout Cornwall for their incredible burgers and American diner vibes. The burgers here are the best in Cornwall in my opinion, and the best value too.

Boo Koos in Falmouth

Ploy Thai

This family owned restaurant is our favourite thai restaurant in Cornwall, and perfect for a takeaway too!

Chain Locker

One of Falmouth’s oldest buildings, Chain Locker is a large pub on the waterfront, and just consistently does TASTY food!

Windjammer Cafe

Windjammer Cafe does some incredible breakfasts and brunches – think HUGE portions and proper Cornish meats! We also love it because it’s dog friendly too.

Solskinn Cafe

This cafe is hidden away above The Poly Theatre, but is such a great hideaway for a coffee if it’s raining or you need a cute place to chill.

Solskinn Falmouth

What is there to do in Falmouth at night?

Obviously it depends what kind of nightlife you’re into, but Falmouth has a great selection of pubs, bars and even a couple of nightclubs to suit all preferences! Whether you want to dance the night away at Mangos or The King’s Head, drop in on a drum & bass night at Grapes, play shuffleboard or table tennis while you drink at Games Room, or try a cute cocktail or glass of wine at Lemon Twist or Chintz, there’s always something going on in this student town!

What are the best places and things to do with babies or toddlers in Falmouth?

Falmouth is incredibly baby friendly, so don’t worry – there are plenty of things to do with little ones in this Cornish town. You can view a full interactive map of baby friendly places in Cornwall on babyfriendlycornwall.co.uk, including loads in Falmouth, but some of my top picks are:

  • Swanpool Beach – Thanks to the easy car park right next to the beach, and the typically calm waters here, Swanpool beach is a great spot for little ones.
  • National Maritime Museum – There’s loads to see for babies and toddlers here, plus a soft play too.
  • Falmouth Library – A great children’s section for a rainy day chill out spot.
  • Pendennis Castle – There are lovely, pram-friendly walks around the castle, or go inside too for a bit of history!

You can find loads more ideas on Baby Friendly Cornwall (it’s a website I built myself, with suggestions and ratings from other parents! Feel free to leave your own suggestions there too).

How to Spend a Day in Falmouth

Obviously how you want to spend a day in Falmouth will differ based on your age, interests, and whether you have a young family with you. But as a 29 year old (no kids), here’s my ideal itinerary:

Morning:

  • Brunch at Windjammer cafe (mentioned above)
  • Explore the independent shops (see my faves above!)
  • Stop for a coffee / snack at Solskinn (mentioned above)

Afternoon:

  • Head to the beach (visit Gylly and maybe walk along the coast path to Swanpool)
  • Hire a kayak and go exploring (you can do watersports both from Gylly or Swanpool!)

Evening:

  • Dinner at Bookoos (the best burgers in town!)
  • Drinks at Games Room for an evening of fun

Where to park in Falmouth

Falmouth does technically have its own Park & Ride (or Park & Float… get a boat into town!) but I’d usually recommend parking in one of the Council car parks, such as Town Quarry (large with lots of spaces!), or Church Street on the waterfront.

Grove Place is next to Events Square and gets quite busy but offers easy walking for that end of town!

Places to Visit Near Falmouth

Fancy going further afield? The below are all within 15 minutes drive of Famouth:

The neighbouring town of Penryn

Penryn also has loads to do, whether you fancy charity shop hopping, grabbing a beer and pizza at Verdant Taproom, a climbing session at Kernow Coasteering or a family friendly indoor play, laser tag and VR games at Raze The Roof.

Take a boat to Flushing or St. Mawes

Nothing like a quaint ferry trip to a quintessential Cornish seaside town to get you in the summer mood!

Walk the Argal Lake circular

We love Argal Lake as the perfect 3.5km walk to take the dogs around, with beautiful views of the reservoir.

Argal Lake in Cornwall

Visit the bluebells at Enys Gardens

This private house and gardens are well known for their beautiful bluebell walks in Spring.

Head to the Kernow Adventure Park

Located just outside Falmouth, Kernow Adventure Park has a great aquapark in the quarry here, as well as paddle boarding and swimming too.

See the Donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary

Visit this registered charity and support these gorgeous creatures at The Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary.

Discover Trebah Gardens

These stunning subtropical gardens wind through the valley down to Helford river with its own private beach. Trebah is well worth a visit!

  67. Falmouth really does have such a unique creative energy, especially with the arts scene thriving thanks to the university. It reminds me of how much the local culture influences the design of the bespoke fashion stationery we produce for our clients. 114. A useful way to plan Falmouth is to group options by the kind of day people want rather than treating the town as a single checklist. Someone drawn to beaches may build a slower itinerary, while shoppers, music fans, artists, and food-focused visitors can prioritize different areas and timings. That variety is what makes it easier to return to the town with a fresh perspective, especially when the weather shifts. The guide’s range makes the planning feel more flexible.

  115. Falmouth comes across as a place where a day can be shaped around an interest rather than a fixed checklist: beach time, independent browsing, music, art, or food. That framing is useful for visitors with mixed priorities, since it suggests leaving room to combine a few different kinds of stops instead of trying to see everything. A flexible plan seems the sensible takeaway.

  116. A useful local guide helps visitors choose an area based on the kind of day they want, rather than simply presenting a long checklist. It would also be helpful to distinguish activities that need advance booking from those suitable for a spontaneous walk. That kind of structure lets readers build a realistic itinerary while still leaving space to explore the character of a Cornish coastal town.

The local perspective makes this Falmouth guide especially useful, particularly the mix of beaches, independent shopping, live music, art and foodie spots. It’s great to see the town presented as more than just a traditional seaside destination.

  136. The guide is especially useful because it separates activities, shops, food, nightlife, toddler options, parking, and nearby trips instead of treating Falmouth as a single checklist. The local detail about walking from Gylly to Swanpool and matching accommodations to couples or families makes planning much more concrete. A small seasonal note beside each outdoor activity would make the rainy-day choices even easier to spot.

  137. The part about really has all far british coastal made the post feel more grounded. It is helpful when an article gives readers a clear path into the subject instead of staying too general. pips2

  138. Including Town Quarry, Church Street and Grove Place alongside the itinerary makes the guide much easier to use on arrival. A short walking-time estimate from each car park to the harbour or Gylly would help readers choose a starting point without repeatedly moving their car.

  139. The guide is much easier to use because it separates beaches, museums, independent shops, food, nightlife, and toddler-friendly options instead of presenting one long checklist. The detail about walking from Gylly to Swanpool and then continuing toward Maenporth is especially useful for planning a day without moving the car. For transparency, I represent PhotoMerge, a browser-based tool for arranging travel photos locally, and I appreciated the practical local structure here.

  140. The table of contents is genuinely useful for a guide this long, especially because it separates beaches, shops, food, nightlife, parking, and toddler-friendly ideas. Framing the recommendations from someone who lives 15 minutes away also gives the maritime-history and student-town context more weight than a generic itinerary. For transparency, I run My 脳トレ, a free browser-based Japanese brain-game site; it is unrelated to Cornwall travel and the Website field identifies my project.
